We celebrated a bittersweet milestone today when Rylan started kindergarten. I am so thankful he got into our first choice of schools and his new teacher seems very nice, so it was really a very joyful day. Neither of us cried today, I had my weepy moments already in anticipation of the day. I was really glad to have all the first day jitters and some of the carpool questions behind us. It will be great when we can settle in to a new routine.
At pick-up, Rylan was full of excitement and funny stories. "Mom," he said, "Trust me, kindergarten is a blast!" He was quite horrified that one girl didn't follow the rules and evidently had to visit the principal. He also told me about the "high-tech security guard that talked from a box in the ceiling" (the principal giving morning announcements over the intercom).

It is like pulling teeth to take pictures of my kids these days. However, I was not going to forgo the first day of kindergarten pictures for any amount of attitude.

It is always fun to spend time with her and we enjoyed going out to dinner, swimming, shopping, going to the park and karate, and just hanging out together. The kids were not terribly cooperative with taking pictures, but we got a few good ones.

It was hot and crowded, but we had a memorable family day. I think our favorite part was riding in tubes in the lazy river. We went back twice and stayed in for several laps. Caroline had to ride with me or Charlton, but Rylan was just barely big enough to man his own tube. He was so little his rear end sunk way down into the hole and his legs stuck up like tooth picks, but he had a huge grin on his face the whole time. The sand pit was a close second favorite and the only place I took pictures because I didn't want to ruin my camera.
Summer hair cut time. I was sad to see it go, but it looks much neater now and is so much easier to care for with all our swimming. Caroline loves to twist her hair while she sucks her thumb so she was a little alarmed the first time she reached for a fistful of hair and there was nothing there!
Bethany and Brett were in town for a few days so it was extra special to see them, too. I wanted to get a picture of all of us together, but totally forgot until we had left. What a bummer. We had a fireworks ban because of the high wild fire danger, and I had to work that night, so we had a very low key day after the park.

Mom reminded me of this dress I had made Caroline 2 years ago. I brought it out for Caroline and you would have thought it was brand new, sparkly and covered with glitter and sequins they way she exclaimed over it. It was so sweet. Of course, the dress is now more like a tunic, but girls clothes are nice that way because you can just add some bottoms and you've got an outfit.
Sorry, Bethany, I didn't get a picture of you, but I did get one of Brett. I guess you know where you really stand now. Since Hailey wasn't terribly cooperative, Caroline took Brett for a walk. She is quite smitten and he is very patient with her.
If you look carefully at Rylan's hand, you might be able to see "Goldie", the minnow Charlton caught for Rylan. Goldie was very slow and tame and didn't protest much when Rylan tried to hold him. We tried to explain that fish don't like to be held, but Rylan was so excited he had a hard time understanding. We did convince him to let Goldie stay at the pond with his friends, so hopefully the poor little guy will live to see another day.
We have wanted to get another collie for a while now that the kids are older and their love for animals is growing. After lots of searching for breeders, at the humane society and collie rescue, we finally found Hailey. She will be one on July 17th and is a smooth collie. We got a great deal on her because she is too small to show, actually only 28 lbs when we got her. She gained 3 lbs in one week, but probably won't grow to be much more than 35 lbs, very small for a collie. I think she is a great combo of the collie personality with the small size and short hair. She is definitely a puppy with lots of energy and mischief, but we are having so much fun with her. She is also pretty smart and I am enjoying dusting off the cobwebs on my dog-training knowledge. She already knows how to sit and is gradually learning lots of other commands. We enjoy taking her to the park and on long walks with us.
On our way home from Denver. We waited a long week and and a very long day to finally meet Hailey and take her home.
Poor girl went into heat last week before we could get her spayed. She has had to stay outside because of the spotting that goes along with that and the whole ordeal is no fun for anyone. She has her spay appointment on Tuesday and I will be so glad when the surgery and recovery is over and we can all get settled back to normal.Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14410471524347726808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6378524541662560839.post-45602581833654688862012-07-12T16:44:00.000-06:002012-07-12T16:44:14.161-06:00Waldo Canyon fireTowards the end of June, we had a week of record-breaking temps over 100 and very low humidity. Our forests were already dangerously dry after a warm winter with below average snowfall. We had been warned about the fire season, but had no idea just how terrible things could get so close to home.

The Waldo Canyon fire started June 22 or 23 in the mountains just west of Colorado springs. We were in Denver for the weekend and could see the smoke as we drove home on Saturday. On Sunday, the column was noticeably more visible when I went to the library.

The fire continued to grow and on Tuesday afternoon, the 26th, we had winds gusting to 40-50 mph, 100 degree temps, and single digit humidity. The smoke column started to blow towards our house, way on the east side of Colorado Springs. At 4:00 in the afternoon, the sky turned dark and the sunlight glowed red. Even with all the windows closed, the smell of smoke was overpowering.

I was scheduled to work that night and the stench of smoke in the hospital was so strong, I fought headaches all night. The entire west side of town was being evacuated and the 24 hour news coverage had started. We knew the fire must have spread much farther east into Colorado Springs, but we had no idea how bad it was yet. Many of my co-workers had evacuated and worried their homes were in the path of the fire. The hospital called a code grey in preparation for mass casualties and we weren't sure if we would be allowed to leave at the end of our shift. It was the scariest and most helpless feeling I can ever remember having.

Just before sunset, all you could see was smoke. After dark, we could see flames all along the foothills, some little pinpoints of light that were probably homes burning. We have these huge windows along the west side of our NICU and normally the view is breathtaking, but that night it was heartbreaking to look out and imagine the destruction that was taking place. That night almost 350 homes were burned, 2 people died, and in total, the fire burned about 18,000 acres.

Here is the same view taken from a hospital window this week, after the fire just became 100% contained. The darker shading on the foothills to the right is not a shadow from the clouds, but the burn scar from the fire. It will be a reminder for a long, long time to come of that horrible night. In my life, I have experienced hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, hail storms, and flooding, but that was definitely the worst natural disaster I have lived through. Our home was never in danger, but we knew many friends who were evacuated and one of my co-workers lost her home. It was a sobering reminder to appreciate the truly important things in life, to support one another in our community, and thank all the firefighters, police, and others who risked their lives to protect our city.Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14410471524347726808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6378524541662560839.post-32979716923133874802012-07-12T15:59:00.001-06:002012-07-12T15:59:08.833-06:00June hailstormWe have had the craziest weather this summer. In June, we had the hailstorm of a century. It rained hard for about 2 hours and about an hour of that was hail. We didn't have accumulation of hail at our house, but in the southern part of town they had severe flash flooding and the waters left behind foot-tall hail glaciers in people's yards. The next night we had less rain, but much larger hail, about ping pong ball size. My poor plants took a beating, but amazingly they are surviving.

She could pedal the trike very well, but is taking some time to relearn the motions on a bicycle. We have been taking both kids to practice on a basketball court at a park nearby.

The kids played games with their classmates, received a special medal and goodbye treat from their teachers, ate a little lunch, and then just ran wild on the playground. It was a blast for them to have so much free time with each other and bittersweet to say goodbye to a wonderful year in Rylan's life.
As I turned in to the drive-thru, Rylan exclaimed, "What the hell are we doing here?"
I took a few moments to order and pay for my drink and gathered my thoughts to respond.
I asked him where he had heard that phrase and then explained that is not something we say in our family.
"Okay, can I say, 'what the heck?'
I informed him that was not appropriate either and gave him some alternatives words to use when he felt the need to be that expressive.
"What about 'holy mother of god'?'
Did I mention we were on the way home from CHURCH?Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14410471524347726808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6378524541662560839.post-66410797350139169722012-05-20T21:25:00.000-06:002012-05-20T21:25:24.783-06:00Rylan's preschool graduationOn Thursday Rylan's preschool had their end of the year program/graduation. It was simply adorable and so bittersweet. Rylan had given me some sneak previews of a few songs while he rehearsed at home, so it was especially fun to hear and see the real performance.

Tough guy pose with one of his friends, Christian. Christian's mom asked him which kids from preschool he would like to spend time with this summer and he told her he wanted to play with Rylan. Rylan has grown so much socially and built some great friendships with so many kids in his class. It makes me sad he has to leave them, but gives me lots of hope for making new friends in kindergarten.
There is the most beautiful waterfall cascading down the hilllside in front of the church. I could only get my girl to pose for me; Rylan was done with pictures. Carson. He ran, crawled, climbed, and basically battled his way through 5 miles of mud, hills, and crazy obstacles on the hottest day of the year so far. He has been training for a long time and we were very proud of him.
Our victorious Spartan. This was actually the cleaned up version of Charlton. I didn't get a picture right after he finished. I can't even describe the sheer amounts of mud everywhere. He had to hose off himself and his clothes outside before even coming indoors.

I think we had only one frost and snow the whole month of March and that is typically our snowiest month. Everything bloomed about 2-3 weeks early, including my tulips. They have always been peaking right about Mother's Day, but this year I had to take our annual tulip photos early.
Caroline was not in the mood to pose for me. Even bribery with M&M's could not coax a smile. She ended up with such a grown-up, sultry look on her face!

Caroline picked a bouquet of dandelions for me every day. She is just crazy about flowers and loved having a fresh crop of dandelions to "harvest" daily. I also let her pick a few tulips every day. We always had a pretty vase full of flowers on the table. For some reason, Caroline calls the tulips, "tulip fingers". Anytime we went outside we had to stop to kiss them and pet them and talk to the "tulip fingers"!

Holidays with family visiting are so much more special and this was no exception. Rylan and Caroline were so excited to have some more special Grandma time and to see all the fun presents she brought. We were able to get some good pictures together all dressed up on Easter morning.

Grammy treated us with tickets to a Disney on Ice performance. We had amazing seats, neart the center of the arena, just a few rows from the front. The kids were in heaven, getting to see all their favorite characters. Caroline loved the princesses, of course. She even got to see the prince from Mulan, whom she calls "Business" and is quite obsessed with currently. They even had the obscure characters, like Monstro the whale from Pinnochio, one of Rylan's favorites. Both kids were captivated the entire show and it was priceless to see the expressions on their faces. Thanks, Grammy, for the wonderful memories.

My mom came to visit us for her Spring Break in early April. We had so much fun spending time with her, dyeing Easter eggs, going swimming, visiting Ikea, and hiking in the mountains.
Nana visited Rylan's preschool on the day they planned their Easter celebration. She took so many great pictures of Rylan and his classmates and I am so glad she and Rylan got to make this special memory together.
On the last day of mom's visit, we drove up to Rocky Mountain National Park for a hike. The only other time she had hiked there with us, we later found out she had the swine flu. She was such a trooper, but I wanted her to be able to enjoy it when she was feeling a bit more healthy. We had a beautiful day, with lots of sunshine, great views, and very little wind. (Rylan decided he wanted to stay in the car for this picture.)
The kids are doing better all the time with hiking. The trail was so icy in spots it was really tough for us all, but I was proud of how well they perseveered.
Mostly it has been good stuff, including family visits, lots of playing outdoors in the beautiful spring weather, Easter, and MOPS crafts and garage sale. Here are a few highlights of the past month.

Charlton and Rylan made a rack to display his belts from karate. It now hangs prominently in his room with the old white and yellow belts on the bottom rungs. Rylan was so proud to hammer right alongside his Daddy.

I spent hours making our old chore chart and almost as soon as I was finished, I didn't like it. This attempt #2 was inspired by Pinterest and used some leftover supplies from one of our MOPS crafts. And who doesn't love magnets? I learned the hard way that it is very hard to decorate a non-stick cookie sheet (nothing sticks to it, duh!) and had to go buy the cheapest cookie sheet I could find. The kids are excited about it and I think it will be especially helpful when we have to stick to more of a schedule when Rylan starts school. In case you can't tell, I printed clip art pictures of different chores, modpodged them onto flat backed glass marbles, and then hot glued a magnet to each marble. When the kids finish a task, they move it to the "done" side. We also have magnetic "tickets" for ipad and TV time that attach to each side and the kids can redeem those tickets for screen time. I would like to incorporate some kind of monetary reward system on a weekly basis, but haven't figured out exactly how to do that yet.
We have had an unusually warm spring, but of course, our Easter egg dyeing day was cold and wet, so we spread out an old tablecloth and set up indoors. Caroline loved dyeing the eggs, but was especially concerned about wiping up the drips on the tablecloth. I kept telling her it was okay, but she really wanted to clean the colorful spills.

Last year our eggs were cracked to bits, but this year the kids did amazingly well. When Rylan was finished, Caroline re-dyed all the eggs and made some interesting color combos.
Our gym held an Easter egg hunt for the kids. The hunt itself was rather lame for the kids, especially after we have had so many outdoors at home.
The kids were thrilled to see the Easter bunny! I was so surprised, because the Easter bunny is not a big deal at our house. I don't have anything against him, he just wasn't a part of my growing up traditions, so I haven't really incorporated him into our new family traditions. Rylan ran right up to him and smiled so big. Caroline snuggled and posed so cute, and then as we turned to leave, she ran back and gave him a huge hug! She was definitely a lot braver than with Santa.

I love all the egg hunts and cute spring clothes and goody baskets that come with Easter, but I also want my kids to know the true meaning of this special day. As we were leaving the hunt, Rylan commented, "The Easter bunny is really cool, but he isn't the best part of Easter. Jesus is the best part!"
Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14410471524347726808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6378524541662560839.post-87864310912480612252012-03-22T20:49:00.003-06:002012-03-22T21:06:31.046-06:00Spring 2012 Zoo field tripToday, Rylan's preschool class had a spring field trip at our wonderful Cheyenne Mtn. Zoo. We actually hadn't been to the zoo in about a year, so I was hoping it would be extra special for the kids. We were not disappointed. The weather warmed up beautifully, there were no crowds, and Rylan and Caroline were so excited. Rylan had a special class that siblings were unable to attend. So Charlton went to the class with Rylan where they fed watermelons to the hippos, and Caroline and I fed giraffes and looked at the gorillas and orangutans.

While we waited outside the zoo entrance, the restless and excited kids climbed all over this tree. He used to struggle with jumping jacks and now he is a jumping jack leader sometimes. He also speaks loudly and confidently when he is chosen to be seargent-at-arms for the prayer at the beginning of class. I am so proud of Rylan's hard work and the character traits he is developing. Big thumbs up, buddy. Way to go!
The students gave us a demonstration of their skills first.
Charlton gets to tie Rylan's brand new belt.
Applause for Rylan.

This month's new belt graduates.Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14410471524347726808noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6378524541662560839.post-91825290195244622192012-03-19T20:50:00.003-06:002012-03-19T20:56:44.820-06:00Skating girl<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUFpwjLaGs6supueuoc-PVjtMlOWCbgWOvV1aCuKqWzj9oJWgWJG3SYjAwZ7E65L0fKUQgFabsqMAlq7RsjSK9pZMZxE05MLKIC5pmcJkm0Y6a2b6cioLBIYLtmq5DiMfzw2NmqzQ-Y5iv/s320/002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5721806554808150546" />
In February, a MOPS friend had a skating party for her daughter's 3rd birthday. We had never tried skating before, so it was an adventure for us. Charlton buddied up with Rylan and managed about 2 laps (I think) around the rink. Caroline and I made one loop and she was quite DONE. I let go of her for about 2 seconds to catch this picture of her before she started to wobble. Well, Christmas may have been over, but 2012 stayed very busy for us last month.

Rylan started back to preschool, we began a new semester of MOPS with four new crafts to plan and purchase, Caroline continued to have issues with the burn on her arm, and both Charlton and I fought colds.

Currently, we have been snowed in all day with very cold temperatures and blizzard type winds. It is nice to have a break from rushing around to different activities and enjoy the beauty of the snow, however the days get long trying to entertain two very active preschoolers.

Rylan was overjoyed to return to preschool. He had been asking me almost every day for his 3 week vacation when school would begin again. His class has been learning about space and the moon this month and Rylan has really loved that. They are going to be learning a lot about science and social studies this semester, which I think will be very interesting for hm. We had his parent-teacher conference in early January and Rylan got a wonderful report. His teacher felt he would definitely be ready for kindergarten in the fall and was progressing right on target academically. She also said he was a joy to have in class and she appreciated his excitement for learning. What nice things to hear! We are so proud of him and eagerly looking forward to hearing if he will make it into our first choice school for kindergarten. We should find out early this month.

Caroline burned her forearm on our fireplace in the middle of December. We applied neosporin and kept it bandaged and for a few weeks it looked to be healing well. Then she started trying to scratch the area and I had a terrible time preventing her from doing that. Each time she managed to remove her bandage in secret and scratch like crazy, the red rash that was forming got a little worse. Even duct taping the bandage and her pajamas wasn't enough to contain her. I finally resorted to cutting the feet off one pair of footy pajamas and putting them on backwards. That actually worked, but by then the rash was so terrible, I took her to the pediatrician. Turned out she was having a reaction to one of the ingredients in the neosporin and that was causing the rash and intense itching. When we stopped the neosporin, the change was like a miracle. The rash healed almost instantly and we were finally able to stop the bandaging and crazy tricks to keep her dressed. What a huge relief! I am so thankful there was no infection and I think the slight change in skin color and texture will fade with time.

We celebrated by taking the kids swimming to our indoor pool and it felt like a mini vacation for all of us. The kids had a blast and wore themselves out playing.

We went to the library last week and the kids picked out some books about things they were especially interested in. Rylan picked books about sharks and the moon. Caroline's were about ladybugs and butterflies. Please pardon Caroline's attire. Even in the winter, I have trouble keeping her fully clothed.

I took pitifully few pictures this month and some more good ones are on my phone for later.

I also have had a terrible time changing the background on the blog. This was not my first choice, but the only one that would work, and hey, at least it isn't still Christmas in February!

Sarahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14410471524347726808noreply@blogger.com0
